Over the years of practicing as a dentist, I have noticed a good percentage of adult coming from some Asian counties, such as China, have some permanent staining on their teeth. The staining is caused by ingestion of a specific category of antibiotics called Tetracycline or its derivatives like Minocycline, and Doxycyline. The manifestation of the side effect of the drug includes dark greyish banding on affected teeth. This greyish banding is permanent and is intrinsic. It means the staining is incorporated into the tooth. It cannot be easily removed by superficial methods like cleaning and teeth whitening.
For this reason, the tetracycline and its derivatives are not recommended for mother into the second and third trimester of pregnancy or child before years of eight. of practice,
Because the tetracycline staining is persistent, the only way to deal with it is to mask it with artificial dental materials. Dentists can use veneers (a thin porcelain laminate covering) to be placed on the tooth. If the tooth has other more complicated defect, full ceramic crowns are recommended. Usually typically 6 to 8 crowns or veneers are needed to cover the upper anterior teeth, depending on the patient’s smile. If the patient’s smile reveals more of his/her teeth, then 8 crown/veneers are required.
These cosmetic dental procedures not only can change the appearance of the teeth. It can also improve the self-confidence.
