In dentistry, dentist always concerns with primarily two major causes of problems relating to patient’s dental health. The first is to dealing with cavity-causing bacteria within the plaque (or food debris) on the surface of tooth and find out ways how to repair the defect. The second is to dealing with the support system of the tooth and find out ways to best support the tooth.
Coincidentally, the periodontal cleaning or Scaling and Root Planing in its technical term can be effectively performed to treat both of these concerns. The periodontal cleaning is removal of any plaque and calculus around the tooth and within the sulcus between the tooth and the gum tissue around the tooth. It may sound pretty mundane. Most people think it is just a glorified cleaning procedure. In fact, it removes the plaque which contains cavity-causing bacteria. It removes the cause of the first major problem in dentistry. By keep the teeth clean, the tooth will have less likely to have tooth cavity.
Secondly, this periodontal treatment is intended to keep clean the sulcus between the tooth and gum tissue. If these bacteria within the plaque accumulate in this sulcus, they will deteriorate the support bone around the tooth. And then If the bone around the tooth is compromsed, then the tooth will become infected and even loose and the tooth may need to be extracted. So this periodontal treatment can prevent these problems.
In addition, this single procedure is able to treat every teeth in the mouth.
